There are plenty of reasons to erase a website or a specific address from search engine results. Maybe the search engine is sending too much traffic to a specific page, or maybe you just want a more private site. While it’s hard to totally hide your website from view–nothing’s private online–you can give search engines instructions to erase your information from their results. Open Notepad or TextEdit and type in the following two lines: User-agent: * Disallow: / If you wish to erase a specific URL, add another “Disallow” line that includes the URL’s relative path like so: Disallow: /sample-section/sample-file.html Save the file to your computer as “Robots.txt.” Upload the file to the root folder of the website you wish to erase (so that it’s located at yoursite.com/Robots.txt). Wait. The next time search engine spiders crawl your site, you’ll be taken out of their indexes, but it may take a few days to a few weeks for the changes to go into effect.
