Even if you know how to do the math, entering numbers into the calculator wrong can get you into trouble. Here’s an easy way to enter numbers written in scientific notation (i.e. 5×10^3) into your calculator. Type the coefficient of the number into your calculator. The coefficient is the part of the number that comes before the “x10” portion. Locate the “EE” button. You may have to press the “2nd” button to properly activate the function–on the TI-83, for example, you have to press the “2nd” key and then the comma; on the TI-89 you only have to press the “EE” key. This button serves as the “x10” in the scientific notation. There is no need to type *10. Now type the power of 10. For the number above, the power will be 11. A decimal will have a negative number for its power. Now you’re done!
