The current Basilica du San Marco, or House of St. Mark, in Venice is the third church to occupy the site since the first structure was completed in the year 828 AD. Originally built to house the remains of Saint Mark the Evangelist, which were stolen from Alexandria by Venetian merchants, the current church is commonly considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe.
