Midway Geyser Basin is, as the name suggests, the middle of a series of thermal areas that are strung along the Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park (it is between the Upper Geyser Basin, where Old Faithful is, and the Lower Geyser Basin). It includes two features, Grand Prismatic Spring and Excelsior Geyser, that are among the most striking in all of the Yellowstone thermal areas. It is right next to the road, easy to spot and easy to reach. You will need to stop and cross the river to see it properly, but it is well worth this small investment in time. Go to Midway Geyser Basin, on the road between Old Faithful and Madison Junction. It is on the south side of the road and easy to identify: Watch for the road signs. When you see them, look for the large thermal area on the far side of the river, looking south.
