Try to find a lodging in or around town if possible, which will let you explore the village by foot at your whim and not always have to get behind the wheel. Nice choices include the Mendocino Hotel on Main Street and the MacCallum House in the middle of town. Big River Beach, reached by a winding trail behind the church on Main Street or a pull-off from Highway 1 just north of the Big River Bridge, is a must-visit. This is one of the prettiest beaches you’ll ever encounter, and the tide occasionally forms a lagoon that is perfect for swimming or wading. Make sure to explore at least one of the amazing state parks nearby. Van Damme, only a few miles south of town, is a gem-with an amazing trail walk that leads to a picturesque waterfall. When it gets foggy in town
