Syncing your iPod with the version of iTunes that is installed on your computer gives you the option of adding music onto the device. If the music list is greyed out when the iPod is plugged into the computer, however, the music on the device might not play, and you won’t be able to select the songs that you want to put onto the device. Changing the settings on your iPod will stop the music list from being greyed over and allow you to edit the tracks on the player. Keep the iPod plugged into the computer and keep the iTunes software program open. Click on the iPod underneath “Devices” on the left side of iTunes. Select the Summary tab found at the top of iTunes. Choose “Manually manage music and videos” in the middle of iTunes. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the program; the settings on the iPod will be altered, and the music list will no longer be greyed over.
