Microsoft Excel is a fantastic spreadsheet. It contains a lot of useful functions beyond the simple spreadsheet calculations. Over the years, Microsoft has added a lot of useful features. As such, it can seem a little intimidating to novice users. Here’s a tip on how to create simple scatter plots using this tool… First, you have to understand what a scatter plot is. It is a plot of independent (x) and dependent (y) values on a 2D chart. You’ll need a dataset such as the example shown in Figure 1. This sample has one independent variable (X) and two dependent variables (Y1 and Y2). Highlight all of this data including the header (the row that contains the X, Y1, and Y2 headers. Then click on the “Insert” tab and click on the “Scatter” button. Choose the first box with just points as shown in Figure 2.
