How Do You Drive With A Visual Impairment?
A biotic telescope is a miniature telescope that is attached to a pair of eyeglasses. They help people with low vision to see further away by magnifying objects and images. Through the use of bioptics, some people with low vision are able to obtain a driver’s license. Before obtaining a pair of bioptics for the specific reason of driving, check with your Department of Motor Vehicles to see if driving with bioptics is permitted in your state. Dr. Richard J. Shuldiner lists each state law on his website (see resources below). Ask your eye doctor if he/she can test your eyes for bioptics. If they can’t, ask for a referral. A doctor will test to see if bioptics will bring you vision to a required level as described by the Department of Motor Vehicles. If it is found that bioptics will correct your vision enough to obtain a driver’s license, check with your states visual impairment organization to see if you qualify for a grant to cover the expense of the bioptics.
