Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway cuts through two national forests as it follows a 120-mile route from McCloud in northern California to Tulelake, near the Oregon border. You will experience lava flow deposits, mountains, quiet lakes and rushing waterfalls as you drive through Modoc National Forest and Klamath National Forest. Allow 3 hours to drive straight through, or take a day to experience the natural wonders you will encounter along the byway. Start in McCloud, a small town nestled at the base of Mt. Shasta. Travel east to McCloud River Falls, a trio of waterfalls connected by a hiking trail. Follow the trail to the 15-foot Lower Falls, then hike up to the 50-foot Middle Falls and end at the 30-foot Upper Falls. Dive off the 15-foot Lower falls and enjoy a swim in the cool waters.
