How Do You Drive A Standard Shift Automobile?
There are certain things that everyone should know how to do. Hold a conversation, change a lightbulb, cook a meal, drive a standard shift automobile. Driving a stick–like parallel parking–is becoming a lost art, but it really isn’t that hard. There are good reasons for learning to drive a stick, and even better ones for insisting that your teenager drive a standard–you cannot text while driving a stick shift. Not even on the freeway, because sudden stops or slowing takes both feet and both hands. Find a large, flat area where no other cars or pedestrians are likely to get in your way. Sort out your feet–your right foot is for the gas and the brake. Your left foot is for the clutch only. Look at your stick shift knob or owner’s manual to find the shift pattern. The position of “reverse” can be in different places–usually it is either right under fifth gear, or you press the knob down into its housing and shift up and to the left, next to first gear.
