How Do You Draft Water With A Fire Engine?
Fire engines in cities can tap into local water supplies using hydrants. However, in rural areas, adequate water supply may not be readily available. Most fire engines are capable of drafting water directly from lakes or ponds, allowing them to fight fires anywhere. Couple your hard suction hose to the engine pump. Attach the hose strainer to the other end. Place the hose strainer in the water, making sure that it is not close to any mud bogs or places where it might pick up debris. Turn on the main engine. Keep it in neutral and allow it to idle. Close the tank suction valve completely, checking the appropriate gauge before proceeding. Open the suction inlet valve, again checking the gauge to make sure it is completely open. Engage the primer and make sure the water is flowing through it continuously. Put your foot on the service brake in the cab, and start the pump engine or lever if necessary. Adjust the pump panel throttle to the appropriate PSI (pressure). Specifics vary by engine
