How do you donate clothes to the salvation army for a tax refund?
The Salvation Army should provide you a receipt for your donation. Some charities painstakingly detail what you donated (i.e. 1 red sweater in good condition, 2 pairs of jean in excellent condition, etc.). Others may hand you a signed, blank form with the charity’s name and address on it and tell you to fill it out yourself. These are the worst if you get audited. My suggestions: • If you are donating a substantial amount of clothing lay them out on your bed and take a photo of the pile. Take individual photos of anything valuable (such as a designer suit with the tags still on it). • Write down in detail (before you donate the clothes) what you are giving away. Include the type of clothing (T-shirt, skirt, blazer, etc.) and its condition (good, excellent, new with tags). • The IRS allows you to deduct the “fair market value” of your donation.
