As the joke goes, Ginger Rogers had to do everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in heels. In the waltz, the man leads and the lady follows, but their steps are basically the same except for moves like underarm turns. Both dancers try to achieve an elegant, flowing movement with a graceful rise and fall. Be sure to learn the basic box step before adding more complicated moves. Once you have the basic waltz movements, practice using music in 3/4 time. Stand with your feet together (closed position) and place your left hand on the man’s shoulder and your right hand in his left hand. Step back with your right foot. Place your left foot back and to the side (at the back left corner of the “box”). Bring your right foot next to your left foot. Step forward with your left foot.
