Irish step dancing consist of several similar basic steps that are then ornamented in different ways to create the flashy dances we know and love. One of the most common of these building blocks is called “sevens” because of the number of beats it takes. There are actually eight beats, but the count is as follows: “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and …” with the “and” being the eighth beat. Stand with your left foot directly in front of your right foot, both feet turned out about 45 degrees. All your weight should be on your right foot. Bring your left foot behind your right foot and sink all your weight onto it, keeping it turned out. This is “one” in the count.
