Mastering the balance beam is as much mental as it is physical. While you must know the correct techniques, your biggest challenge may be keeping your head held high with confidence throughout the routine. Gymnasts should start on the floor and work their way up to tumbling on the beam. Start with your legs together to perform a back handspring. Keep your arms in front or above you, and jump back while arching your back. Grab the beam with your hands, and pull your legs through until your feet are on the beam again. Perform the split jump by starting with feet together. Jump high spreading your legs apart, and land with your feet together again. Do a cartwheel on the balance beam the same way you would on the floor. Start in the lunge position with feet apart, and lean forward while placing hands on the beam.
