The aim of a ruck being to get the ball back on your side of the ruck. Here are some strategies for rucking that I’ve always used (I’ve been a prop for the last 17 years, so I’ve got some idea of what I’m talking about): 1) If you’re entering the ruck early, especially if you’re the first person there, try to seal off the ball legally. Grab the tackled player (your team mate) by the jersey and seal yourself to him with your legs splayed out backwards. Now you’re over the ball to cover it and the opposition players won’t be able to knock you out of the ruck. 2) If you’re joining a ruck that is already underway, try to figure out which opposition players are making a contribution to their team and either hit into them or around them to disrupt their work. 3) Burrowing can be a good option.
