The backhand serve is a good change-up from your normal serve, and may catch your opponent off guard. It takes some practice to get it up to the level of your other serves. Take note of your opponent’s stance and position before you serve. Turn three-quarters of the way toward the baseline of the table, with your feet shoulder width apart. Your paddle arm is closer to the table. Hold the ball loosely in the palm of your hand and reach across your body to situate the ball in front of you. Hold your paddle at about waist height, crossing over toward your opposite hip. Cross your paddle arm under your ball-holding arm. Throw the ball straight up, almost head high (higher throws are harder to hit but have more spin). Lead with your elbow as you swing on the ball with a closed paddle (face down), striking the ball at about 10 to 15 inches above the table. Open your paddle and swing down for backspin.
