Regardless of how well organized and effective your behavior plan may be, there will be times when students do not follow the rules. Disciplining a misbehaving student is a delicate situation, but it is manageable if you consider certain basic discipline principles. By effectively engaging in discipline, teachers can increase the likelihood that students with follow rules in the future. Separate the students from peers. Do not discipline a student in front of their classmates. By isolating the student, you allow for a one-on-one conversation. You also decrease the likelihood that the students will become argumentative. If they are sounded by their peers, they may argue to protect their reputation. Allow cool down time. Do not attempt to discipline the student in the heat of the moment. If you and the student are still angry, the discipline will not be effective as you will be speaking in the heat of the moment and the student will be more contrary then normal because of her anger.
