Let’s be realistic – at this age, almost nothing is going to work just because you say it once. Assuming you’ll never need to repeat yourself as a parent is only going to drive you insane. I have five children, aged late teens to three-year-old twins. I’ve found that the more consistent I am, the faster the child will get the message. My oldest child told me an interesting story. He was learning about random rewards in psychology. It’s the concept used in Las Vegas – reward once in a while at random intervals. It makes whatever activity you’re rewarding completely addictive! I think this is true of toddlers. If they start to get the idea that sometimes they get away with it and sometimes they don’t, it becomes a big game to them. Remember, this age is about testing boundaries anyway… so it fits right in with their little agenda.
