How Do You Disassemble A Washing Machine Agitator?

0

The agitator on a washing machine moves clothes back and forth to clean them. When it fails to work properly it may have to be removed from the washer to repair it. The average do-it-yourselfer will have little difficulty accomplishing this. Make sure that the power is disconnected from the washer before making any repairs. Once the agitator is removed there will be access to the transmission as well. Open the washer lid to gain access to the agitator. Depending on your model, lift the fabric softener dispenser off the top of the agitator. Some models only have a cap that lifts off the top. Remove the barrier cap and the o-ring by pulling them out with your hands. Inspect the o-ring for damage and wear. Replace it if necessary when reinstalling the agitator. Remove the bolt that attaches the agitator to the clutch in the middle using a socket wrench. Lift the agitator out of the washer. Some models, like Maytag, have a flex vane agitator which requires it to be lifted off bell housing.
