Disassembling a Dell laptop is a task that should only be performed in dire situations, or for educational purposes. That said, non-professionals can fully do so, although it is a multi-step process that takes a Phillips head screwdriver and a keen understanding of the computer’s construction. With the battery removed, the motherboard, RAM, hard drive, keyboard and display can all be quickly disposed of by an untrained consumer who has the documentation on hand as a backup. Put the Dell laptop on its back and remove the battery before proceeding. This is an important safety step. Make sure the Dell is powered off, and then locate the outline of the battery on the top center of the back of the unit. The battery release mechanism is just below it.
