File and printer sharing can be a useful feature if you have a home network. With this option enabled, you can share files between desktop and laptop computers and print your documents from any network-enabled PC. Even so, this convenience comes at a price, and it can cause security problems if unauthorized users hack into your network. If you have any security concerns of this type, it is best to disable the printer and file sharing feature of Windows XP. Log onto the computer, and click on the “Start” button. Choose “Settings” from the menu, and then “Control Panel.” Double-click the “Network Connections” applet, and right-click on the network connection. Uncheck the “File and Printer Sharing” check box. Click “OK” to accept the new settings and close the control panel window.
