Being a church choir director can be both a challenging and rewarding job. Whether you are actively seeking a choir director job or have one thrust upon you, preparation and consistency are key to creating a good choral group. Test the waters. The first step to choir directing is becoming familiar with the people you’ll be leading. If no choir is in place at your church, you may want to recruit members through personal announcement, programs/bulletins and a website notice (if the church has a website). If a choir is already in place when you get there, introduce yourself and find out about your members. Plan a practice schedule. Once you have your members, survey them to find out when practice would be most convenient. You’ll never find a time that suits everyone, but you can try to accommodate the largest number of people possible. Spell out expectations.
