That is a pretty dangerous thing to be doing, digging any hole deeper than 4 ft requires that you take safety precautions ie., shoring-this involves digging down to that 4 ft and then putting braces either side of the hole to prevent it from collapsing in on itself and burying you in the process also anything that comes out of the hole needs to be kept a safe distance away again to avoid collapse so if I was you I wouldn’t even attempt this without the proper equipment or this could be the last hole you might dig ok.

Digging is always very hard work. It is very unlikely to be possible with just a shovel. The subsoil will be hard to dig through, and may be impossible without more equipment. In a wood you will also find large roots which would need a saw to cut through and you wouldn’t be able to use a saw in a small but deep hole because there would not be room. Supposing you did succeed you would have to stand in the hole to deepen it and throwing out soil from the bottom would be very difficult. There would be a grave danger of the sides collapsing and trapping you. if you manage a 2 foot hole you will be doing well.
