The rotary phone became all but obsolete with the invention of the touch-tone phone in the 1960s and the cellular phone in the late 1970s. Believe it or not, however, you can still find a rotary phone every once in a while. If you come across one of these rotary phones, follow these steps to dial it. Pick up the receiver on the rotary phone and place the ear piece to your ear. Listen for the dial tone before dialing the phone. Place your finger in the hole corresponding to the first number in the phone number you wish to dial. The numbers go around the dial right to left, from 1 to 9 and then 0. Pull the dial around clockwise until your finger hits the piece of curved metal called the finger stop. Remove your finger from the dial and allow it to return to its original position. Place your finger in the hole corresponding to the next number, and finish dialing until all the numbers are dialed. Listen for the tone.
