Cauda equina syndrome is a serious condition that involves the compression of the nerve roots found in the spinal cord. Cauda equina syndrome can be caused by several things–trauma to the spinal cord, tumors, spinal infections or a herniated disk. Cauda equina syndrome can cause permanent bowel damage and paralysis in patients. If you suspect that you have cauda equina syndrome, you should see a physician right away. Notice the pain in your back and legs. You feel the pain especially in your lower back. The pain in your legs normally radiates down from the lower back. Examine your other symptoms. A person with cauda equina syndrome also has urinary problems and constipation. You may also notice numbness in the pelvic and rectal areas of the body. Call your doctor right away.
