How Do You Diagnose Brake Master Cylinder Problems?
The brake master cylinder on your vehicle is what controls the volume of fluid being forced through the brake system. As you press on the brake pedal, brake fluid is forced through steel brake lines and to a caliper system that works to slow down the vehicle. The master cylinder is what holds the fluid and makes this process possible. If you are having problems with your brakes, you will notice a decrease in brake performance. At that point, you’ll need to troubleshoot the problem to verify that it is the brake master cylinder. Open the hood and verify that the fluid level in your brake master cylinder is between the lower and upper marks on the brake master cylinder. Get in the vehicle and pump the brakes several times and apply constant pressure to the pedal. Have an assistant verify that there is absolutely no brake fluid leaking under the vehicle, in the wheel well, or at any of the brake line connections on the vehicle, including any of the brake line connections under the hood.
