One of the challenges that faces parents of children with developmental disabilities is understanding the special education process. They are compelled to learn what case conferences and Individual Education Plans (IEP) are. It can be a daunting process for a novice, but with time, the purpose of the IEP is easy to understand. Simply put, an IEP is a plan that is designed with the person in mind. Each IEP is unique because it is implemented exclusively for one student. While children without disabilities are educated according to a set curriculum used by the school district, the IEP focuses on the assessed needs of the child based on their special needs. The IEP is the document that is a “road map” for how a team of professionals will address teaching the child based on their assessed skill deficits.
