Here are some tips to determine the amperage, also known as amps, for an electrical outlet. Shut off all electricity or power to the wires in the outlet you are going to change. No sense in taking any risks. Keep a flashlight by your side if you need extra light for the work. Unscrew the electrical outlet with the screwdriver. Remove the faceplate and electrical outlet. Most electrical outlets have screws or fasteners, which keep the wires attached inside it. Loosen these screws to remove the wires. Cap each wire with appropriately colored plastic caps. Flip the electrical outlet over and look for the amps marking. You will usually find this on the bottom of the electrical outlet. There may also be a requirement as to the thickness of the wires that may be used.
