How Do You Determine Small Engine Horsepower?
Being able to calculate the amount of horsepower that your motor generates allows you to compare the efficiency of your motor to other motors of comparable sizes. It also helps you determine if the motor you have is adequate for the task that you want to accomplish. Given the ease with which this calculation can be done, there is no excuse not to know how much horsepower is in your small motor. Tie the string to the motor’s shaft. The string should be fastened in a way that will allow it to wind around the motor once it begins rotating. Tie the other end of the string to the weight. The appropriate size of the weight will vary depending on the strength of the motor you are testing. The weight must be heavy enough to provide some resistance to the motor, but not so heavy that the motor will be unable to move it. Dangle the weighted end of the string off of a high surface so that the weight is suspended in mid air. Start the motor and measure the amount of time that it takes for the stri
