Tote bags are handy and simple to make. You can purchase them in a store, or you can save a lot by making your own if you have basic sewing skills. Another advantage is to be able to design tote bags in different sizes for different purposes. This option is not always available in a purchased bag. Handmade bags can also simply be used as handbags, which are great to match summer outfits. Decide on the size of your tote bag. Design a larger one to be used for groceries, overnight bags or for holding craft projects. Smaller ones can be designed for handbags or for toting smaller items. Make a template (pattern) out of the size tote bag you have decided to design. Use poster board, which can be found in art stores or art/school supply departments, to make a sturdy template.
