It is a common misconception that if you submit a disability claim based on emotional depression to the Social Security Administration, you will automatically be granted benefits. You must, in fact, prove that your depression is severe enough to prevent you from working and keeping a job. There are four basic “areas of functioning” that will be considered by the Social Security judge in deciding whether your depression is severe enough to prevent you from working: daily living skills; social functioning; concentration, persistence or pace; and episodes of deterioration or decompensation. In submitting your disability claim, you must describe and prove, through medical documentation and letters from your mental health practitioner, family, friends and former employers, that you suffer from at least two of these four points of dysfunction.
