How Do You Delete The Index.Dat File?

0

The index.dat file is the file that stores a backup copy of your computer’s deleted history so that when you delete your history, it isn’t really gone forever. If you don’t want anyone to be able to trace your history, you have to delete the index.dat file. However, because the index.dat file is a hidden system file, when you try to delete it, you will usually get a message stating that you cannot delete the file because it is in use. There is a way to get around this, though, by creating another user account with administrative access. Create a new user account by clicking on “Start,” “Control Panel” and then “User Accounts.” Click on “Create New Account,” input the user name for your new account and select the option to grant the account “Computer Administrator” rights. Log off your computer with the current account to which you wish to delete the index.dat file and log in with your newly created administrator account. Click on “Start” and then “Search” to open your computer’s search
