Computer bugs are known as viruses because, just like a human virus, they multiply. If your computer has a virus, it likely came from a different computer, either over the Internet or on an infected drive or file you plugged in or downloaded. If a different computer infected yours with the virus, your computer could be infecting others the same way. To fix your computer and avoid passing the virus on, use a tool included with Windows to delete it immediately. Run Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool. To do so, open the “Start” menu and then click the “Run” dialogue. Type “MRT” here, then hit the “Enter” key. This application comes pre-installed with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. If you cannot run or find the repair tool, download a new copy (see “Resources”).
