How do you deal with care taking a difficult elderly parent?

With my aging in laws, we had to build them a ground level apartment…the lower level of a raised ranch. They still wanted independence but couldn’t drive or do stairs. They lived 5 hours away. By relocating them close by, my sis-in-law was right upstairs, could watch over them, do their shopping, take them to doctors appointments, etc. It eased up the financial strain they had, as she didn’t charge them rent or utilities. When they became more infirm, we could all take turns helping them out care for them. With my mom and step-dad…they lived out of state…also too far for us to help them on a daily basis. Mom was still in good shape but dad was showing signs of Alzheimers. I went to their apartment and took all the dimensions of their rooms and the layout…then designed a duplicate apartment, which we built, attached to our house. This also lightened their financial burdans and we were right next door when they needed help. Things worked out well until dad started wandering. One
