How Do You Cut Small Slate Tiles?
Small slate tiles are often used for roof installation when a complicated look is desired that’s different from the flat shingle look of most modern home designs, or for smaller tile placements such as patios, or as a kitchen backsplash. To place the tiles sometimes requires that they be cut to fit. Cutting the hard dense slate material can be difficult, unless you use the proper tools and procedures, at which point the cuts can be quickly accomplished with a minimum of effort. Mark the small slate tile using a carpenter’s pencil where you intend to make your cut. For straight cuts, use a straightedge to guide your marking, or take a measuring tape and place the metal edge at the start of your cutting line with the body of the tape placed against the edge of the tile. Run the metal edge down the tile to score a line in the top of the tile. Cut a straight line in the slate tile using a slate cutter.
