How Do You Cut Corners In Molding?
The best way to cut inside corners for baseboard molding is by coping the molding joints. This is a technique of cutting the edge of a piece of molding to fit the contour of another piece (same style) of molding. This is the preferred method of doing baseboard molding, by most carpenters over doing miter joints for inside corners. Coping is the preferred method because most walls are not 90 degrees to each other which is key in making a mitered joint look good. In order to do this technique you will have to purchase a coping saw if you don’t have one. The first piece of molding is installed with straight cuts to fit in between the two walls. In this case this piece of molding is between the doorway molding and the wall. Using a miter saw cut a 45 degree angle on a piece of molding long enough to span the wall in which it is going to be installed. Notice that the long side of the angle is toward the inside corner.
