In effect, this creates a hierarchy of categories in your validation ranges. Create your lists. In this example, I have a list of U.S. states, plus a list of a few cities in each state. Set up your first validation list. I have highlighted A2:A7, and clicked on “Data Validation” (in “Data” menu at top). In “Allow”, select “List”. Then select the range of possible choices (in this case, D1: D3). Next, name each subset range to match the options in your first validation range. To do this, highlight the first range (e.g., the California cities), then use Ctrl+F3 to bring up the Name Manager. Click on the “New” button, then type the name of the corresponding choice from the first validation list. In this case, the range name must be “California”. Repeat Step 3 for your remaining
