Perhaps you have seen kits to create asthetically-pleasing-to-the-eye colored sand that is layered in a glass jar, but did you know that you can easily and inexpensively make the colored sand yourself, or put together a colored sand kit to give as a gift? Place paper on a smooth flat surface such as a dining room table. Pour some salt in the middle of the paper, making sure to keep the salt on the paper. How much salt you use will depend on how much of the individual color you want to use. Some colors you may want to have more of, others less. You can judge as you go along, but if you want, 1/4 cup is a fine place to start. Select a chalk color. The pastel colors work best. Rub the chalk back and forth across the salt. Some of the chalk color will go on the paper, but also some will get on the chalk. Keep rubbing the salt until you achieve the desired darkness or lightness you like. Rub more for a darker shade. Double check to see that all the grains of salt have been chalk colored. Ca
