Every family should have a realistic budget in place, and a good budget plan is the foundation of all financial planning. While it is possible to create a budget on the back of an envelope, having a spreadsheet program available can make the creation of that budget a lot easier. Microsoft Works has an excellent spreadsheet program built into it, and best of all, this handy program comes standard with many computers. Log on to your computer and launch Microsoft Works. Choose “Programs” and then “Works Spreadsheet.” Choose “Start a New Spreadsheet” from the list. Choose the headings you want to use for the lines in your spreadsheet. Include as many different income and expense categories as you need, but don’t include so many niche categories that the spreadsheet becomes difficult to use.
