Even though it looks mean and nasty a plumbing snake can save a floor or roomful of…well, you know. Here I’ll tell you some of the methods used for controlling one of these guys. You may just hug your snake when it comes in handy…just make sure to use lots of bleach on it before you do! Look at your plumbing to be worked with the snake. What is the straightest route you can choose to your suspected blockage. Choose to go in as straight as possible because while your snake is flexible you will find it easier to work without going through an S-trap under your sink. Remove any fixtures that may be an extra hinderance to your work such as a p-trap, s-trap, or plug which may allow that straight line down the pipe in question. Loosen the set screw on the body of your snake and push as much line into the pipe as will fit.
