How Do You Cope At Home With An Alcoholic Mother?
• Talk to her about how you feel when she’s sober. This isn’t always going to be effective though, as she may be in denial, angry, or simply refuse to listen to you. At least give it a try. • Work through your own feelings on your own, even if she won’t listen to you. Use a journal to write it out, or talk to a friend you can trust. • Get help. Try to get your mother to a doctor or counselor for treatment. Seek support from other family members to get her to help. Also, consider AlAnon. This group is for those that are affected by those that are drinking. • Remember that you’re not responsible for your mother’s drinking behavior. If you’re a child, ask for help from another family member or someone you can trust to help get your mom some rehabilitation treatment. • If home conditions are dangerous, seek refuge immediately.
