Cooking with propane is a fast and efficient way to prepare meals for your crew during a camping trip, or to heat up soup for one. Propane is a relatively lightweight fuel that is readily available at camp stores along the trail and at your campsite. Although cooking with propane is easier than rounding up fuel for a campfire, using propane burners requires caution. Follow these steps for a safe cookout at your campsite. Screw a propane gas canister to the valve on the side or back of your stove. Light a match or lighter, hold it near the burner of your stove, then slowly open the valve or flame control knob to release the propane. The stove should light immediately. Never turn on the gas before lighting a match because you can allow gas to accumulate, which could cause an explosion. Adjust the flame to medium for cooking food or boiling water.
