Canna Lily plants, although not part of the lily family, very closely resemble the more commonly known calla lily. The Canna plant is a tropical plant that has green leaves with red striations as well as long tube-like flowers. Although most often planted in the garden, some cultures cook and eat the plant roots as a regular part of their diet. The Canna plant is a starchy plant that can be boiled or steamed and placed in stir fry dishes. Remove the root from the Canna plant by cutting the plant with a knife at the base of the green flower and leaf stalks. Place the Canna root in a sink full of water and rub it briskly with the hands to remove any dirt and debris. Use a vegetable scrub brush to thoroughly scrub the entire Canna root.
