Serial ports, also referred to as RS-232 ports, are used for connecting a number of different devices to a computer. Printers, monitors and scanners are just a few of the pieces of hardware that can still be connected through serial ports. More and more though, computers are being made that have few, if any, serial ports built-in. For instance, many laptops provide USB ports only. If you have a device that requires a serial port, but a computer that provides only USB ports, you can convert the USB port to a serial port using a specially-designed cable. Connect the USB end of the USB-to-RS-232 adapter cable into an empty USB port on the computer. The RS-232 end of the cable is left open. Place the CD that came with the USB-to-RS-232 adapter cable in the computer’s CD drive. The computer should recognize the CD and open the driver configuration wizard automatically.
