Garmin GPS units provide accurate positional information. The devices are fed information by a network of geosynchronous satellites that send out very precisely timed pulses of energy. These pulses allow the GPS to locate your position and elevation, with information about speed and course as well. The unit will display your position by latitude and longitude, which can then be transferred to a map or nautical chart. Determine whether the map or chart has the smallest increment listed as seconds or thousandths of a minute. Navigate the Garmin menus and set the unit to display the smallest increment to the same as the map or chart. Locate the latitude number on both sides of the map.
