How Do You Convert Fabric Measurements For Quilt Size?
Planning, cutting, piecing and quilting a bed-sized quilt is a huge project. The trek from the fabric store to the finished product can be a long one, but the first step–buying the correct amount of fabric–is fairly straightforward. Measure the bed for which you are making your quilt. You will need the length, width, and the measurement from floor to mattress top. If you are making the quilt as a gift, you can use the standard bed-size measurement and add inches for the amount of overhang you would like for the sides and end of the mattress. Calculate the total size of the quilt. For example, if you are making a queen-sized quilt, the mattress measures 60″ by 80″ (see Reference 1). The standard bed height is 25″ (see Reference 2). If you want to have the quilt touch the floor, add the height to each side of the mattress, and the height to the length of the mattress for the end of the bed.
