Audio Video Interleave (AVI) is a type of digital video format that was introduced by Microsoft and can be viewed on a variety of different multimedia players. People who want to make backup copies of DVD movies can use the free Handbrake application–available for both PC and Mac–to convert DVD video to the AVI format. Remember that it is illegal to convert DVDs that you do not already own. Go to the Handbrake website (see Resources) and download the latest version of the program. Insert the DVD you want to convert into your computer’s disc drive. Launch the Handbrake application on your PC or Mac computer. A pop-up window will open asking you to select a video source. Choose the DVD as the video source and hit the “Open” button. Click on the “Browse” button and then select a name and storage location for the AVI file you will be creating.
