Outlook is Microsoft’s premier e-mail program. It is part of the higher-end versions of Microsoft Office and includes numerous features. Windows Mail, by contrast, is the simple default e-mail client that comes free with Windows Vista and Windows 7. You may be a longtime Outlook user on an old Windows XP computer but want to switch to the default Windows Mail when you upgrade to Vista or Windows 7. The process is not straightforward — you can’t simply import the PST file into Windows Mail. You can, however, transfer your data to Outlook Express and then to Windows Mail. Don’t worry: it’s easier than it sounds. Import your settings from Outlook to Outlook Express on your XP computer — the one on which you use Outlook. Open Outlook Express. (Click “Start,” then “Programs,” then “Outlook Express.”) When the program opens, click “File,” then “Import Messages,” then “Outlook.” This will import all the messages in your current version of Outlook into Outlook Express.
