Japanese beetles, which are approximately 3/8 inch in length and possess a metallic green body with bronze wing coverings, are a major pest in many lawns and gardens throughout the United States. In its native Japan, the population of this beetle is kept in balance because of natural predators. In the US, however, the number of Japanese beetles has steadily risen to the point where they pose a serious threat to a variety of flowering and fruit-bearing plants, as well as to vegetables. Thankfully, there are several ways homeowners can control the number of Japanese beetles on their property. Remove Japanese beetles by hand from affected plants as soon as you begin to notice them. Drop or scoop the beetles into a container of soapy water in order to drown them.
